Robert R. Tuck while stationed in Okinawa during World War II.

Today, there are very few stories remaining from the World War II era. Even fewer come from World War II veterans. This is one of those stories.

Robert R. Tuck, also known as “Bob,” was born in the West Coast and enjoyed a common childhood. He was a newspaper courier during his teenage years, and maintained an A- average in high school. When war broke out in 1941, Mr. Tuck was quick to enlist in a school-run “Junior Army” program. As a result, he graduated University High School a year early, in 1943.

Within the year, he reported for duty at Washburn Municipal University for military training. There, he practiced as an radio technician, with a focus on fixing aircrafts.

In 1945, Mr. Tuck sailed for Okinawa, arriving on August 5th. During his time in Okinawa, he repaired many war planes, including B-15 bombers. He was discharged in 1946 and started a career in Southern California Edison as an electrical engineer, where he worked for 34 years.

Mr. Tuck currently resides in Torrance, and enjoys his retirement building model trains.
