Lorraine Tani: Lived in Hawaii during Pearl Harbor
Lorraine Tani was born in Maui, Hawaii and later moved to Torrance, California after the war. Lorraine’s parents were born in Hiroshima, Japan making her part of the Nisei generation. Even though she was never put into a Japanese internment camp, her husband and his family went through the hardships and challenges that all Japanese-Americans went through when Executive Order 9066 was established.
During Pearl Harbor: During the bombing of Pearl Harbor Lorraine was in the backyard of her parent’s house playing with her friends, when her parents received a call informing that Japan has bombed Pearl Harbor. Lorrain was living in Maui, Hawaii at that time so she and her family never seen the bombing take place. Once the War has started Lorraine and her family had threw farewell parties for the family members who went out to war.
Executive Order 9066: On February 1942, just ten weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Executive Order 9066 was passed into the government. This
Order made all the Japanese -American citizens to relocate to Japanese Internment camps which they faced many hard challenges. During relocation many Japanese Americans lost their homes.
Luckily for Lorraine and her family was living in Maui, Hawaii which almost the whole population is Japanese -American so she and her family did not have to be relocated anywhere else.
